Imagine being married to someone for decades, only to be left as a divorcee in your 70’s! Well, that’s Dr. Gladys McGarey’s story, as she tells The Guardian in a recent article. Dr. Gladys is never one to shy away from a good story, and this one is a doozy.
Bill and Gladys had a family with six children and a business, were working general practitioners and, as co-founders of the American Holistic Medical Association. Their lives were very very intertwined, to say the least. But the life-changing event, compared to getting a cancer diagnosis was worse. “The hardest thing I’ve ever had to face.” she tells Paula Cocozza from The Guardian.
But you know how the story ends. She doesn’t let the divorce get the best of her. In fact, she goes on to write many books, the latest, The Well-Lived Life, in stores now. The article goes on, ““It’s not a matter of getting over stuff, it’s a matter of living through it,” she says now, speaking on a Zoom call from the house that she built, at Helene’s invitation, behind her daughter’s home. “If you can live through the issues that you have been faced with, they become one of your teachers.””
The book has kept Dr. Gladys plenty busy and we are delighted to see her story featured in The Guardian along with selling the book in their online bookstore. Born of this major life event, Dr. Gladys has adopted the motto “Be Glad”. It’s her car license plate along with her Instagram handle. She knows how to turn a terrible thing into a lesson in life.
The Well-Lived Life: A 102-year-old Doctor’s Six Secrets to Health and Happiness At Any Age is full of those lessons. She’s even given a TEDx talk about holistic medicine and wellness at 100. Longevity at it’s best.
